Estimating as a Competency in Capital Projects
Research Project Workshop
Sunday, June 29, 2008
1:00 pm to 3:30pm
Recognizing the importance of experienced, professional cost estimators, the construction industry is confronted with how to capture the knowledge and skills of highly experienced estimators and transfer those skills to the next generation. The issues facing the industry include identifying the skills, competencies and best practices of cost estimating; developing effective training programs; retaining experienced estimators; transferring cost estimating knowledge to the next generation of estimators; and establishing potential career paths in cost estimating.
The Construction Industry Institute (CII) is sponsoring Oklahoma State University and the University of Kansas to conduct a research study to address these issues. The research is being conducted in collaboration with the AACE International, the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE), the Project Management Institute (PMI), and the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE CI). The research study has five objectives:
Investigate the gap between current and desired estimating expertise and competencies, for both conceptual and detailed estimating.
Identify best practices in the training and retention of cost estimators.
Identify and/or develop best approaches to knowledge transfer of cost estimating expertise.
Identify preferred careers paths for professional cost estimators.
Review cost estimating related curricula in academia and industry.
You are invited to participate in this workshop to contribute to a survey questionnaire focused on these issues, to contribute to a panel discussion, and volunteer to become a member of a study advisory committee for this research project.
